HOT WOMEN, HOT FLASHES: MUSINGS ON MID-LIFE
HOT WOMEN, HOT FLASHES: MUSINGS ON MID-LIFE
Our book, Hot Women, Hot Flashes: Musings on Mid-Life was published by Marabout Publishers, a French publishing company in the Fall of 2007.
Hot Women, Hot Flashes: Musings on Mid-Life is an honest and irreverent look at the realities that many women "of a certain age" experience while they navigate their way through hormones, teenagers, career changes and marital status - and the assault upon self-image and self-esteem that those things invariably cause - only to discover deeper and more empowered versions of themselves. Their e-mail exchanges take place over a single year, and are humorous, feisty, and at times poignant in relating those selected episodes in the contemporary lives of two women whom many readers are going to instantly recognize.
Mary's year begins as her first marriage crumbles (a twenty-one year marriage with four children). The life transitions that follow include guiding her teenagers through the divorce, enhanced breasts and a passionate love affair. She experiences all the changes inherent in mid-life, growing older AKA hot flashes, wet T-shirts (we're not talking Ft. Lauderdale during spring break), bloating, sheets on/sheets off, bleach resistant hair, and happily finds herself reacting to it all in ways that ultimately reinforce her sense of herself instead of diminishing it.
Lorraine's year begins with realizing a life-long dream of opening a tea and sandwich shop in Charleston, SC with a good friend and neighbor - only to discover several months later that the "good" friend and neighbor is a con artist wanted in four states and Lorraine is the latest victim of her partner's scams. This story plays out against the backdrop of the joys and ruts of maintaining a long-term marriage, parenting teenagers, and examining her changing definitions of her own femininity, sexuality and vision for her future.
Together, Mary and Lorraine laugh, cry, commiserate and generate one big Internet pajama party. Their transformation during their year-long correspondence is palpable, entertaining, and most importantly, instantly relatable to millions of women who are trying to forge their way through hormone replacement, first or second marriages, children (his, hers, theirs), careers and their vital friendships.
The largest single population segment in the U.S. is aged 35-55, and this book will be a must-read for those women and the men who want to understand them. Who knew that this book's age group would turn out to be a generation whose members are often healthy, sexy, titillating, and provocative while still needing glasses to read a menu?
